SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women’s basketball team kicked-off a 90-day community service project yesterday (Aug. 22), volunteering as the clean-up crew in a mission to rebuild an elderly woman’s house in
Spartanburg.
The Spartans were on hand yesterday for the first of many work days involving this semester-long task. The house is located on Druid Street off of West Main in Spartanburg and has been unlivable for six years, after a fire burned most of the interior. The women’s basketball team hauled off trash and debris Monday left over from
the devastating fire.
“We’re very fortunate and this is a great opportunity for us to get out in the community and do something to give back,” said head coach Tammy George. “I think it’s great for our kids to see that things aren’t always as good as they have it. It’s just such a great opportunity for us to get out and help a lady get back in her house just in time for Christmas.”
Upstate plans to return multiple times over the next 90-days to assist in clearing the property. The house will be torn down and rebuilt over the next few months. The goal is for the house to be ready for the local elderly woman and her family to move back in by the end of the year.
A Project Rebuild night at a women’s basketball game this season is in the works with hopes of organizing a drive for individuals to donate items to help complete the Druid Street house. More information on the event will be available at a later date.
