The Lesson of the Eagle and the Crow

“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.”  -Maya Angelou

The only bird that dares to peck at an eagle is the crow. The crow sits on the eagle’s back and bites his neck. The eagle does not respond, nor fight with the crow; it does not spend time or energy on the crow, instead he just opens his wings and begins to rise higher in the heavens. The higher the flight, the harder it is for the crow to breathe and eventually the crow falls off due to a lack of oxygen. –Unknown

Summary:

The crow represents people in your life that bring you down through their criticism, negative opinions, or by being a distraction. It’s everything that is pecking at you, prodding you, disturbing you, and challenging you.

Learn from the eagle and don’t fight the crows, just keep ascending. They might be along for the ride, but they’ll soon fall off. Do not allow yourself to succumb to the distractions. Keep your focus on the things you can control so you can continue rising!”

Reflection:

  1. What unnecessary distraction do you need to rise above today?
  2. How do you find flow in your work or sport, when you get in this zone you can truly separate from all distractions and immerse yourself in the task at hand? Think back to when you have found flow in the past. What was your environment like? What music did you listen to? What was the optimal time for you to tackle your “to do list?” etc.
  3. How can you and/or your team use this message to help you?

Moving Forward:

  1. Prepare ahead. Know your response when an obstacle arises. Plan how you will rise above challenging people or situations that you could face.
  2. We can eliminate and overcome many distractions by staying focused on our vision. Keep speaking your goals into existence. Connect with your vision board daily.
  3. Share this message to encourage someone to rise above their distractions.

You have the power within you to rise above whatever is currently seeking to bring you down.” -Unknown
