Every sport, every job, and every career has a certain set of abilities that are needed for success.  Coaches spend countless hours trying to develop sport-specific abilities in each of their athletes.  But regardless of your sport, there are 3 ABILITIES you must have in order to reach your full potential.  Every athlete in every sport should posses these 3 abilities.  And these three abilities can be mastered by ANY athlete at ANY level.  In spite of this fact, many athletes never master any of these 3 abilities.

So what are these 3 ABILITIES that will take your game to the top?  What are the 3 ABILITIES that transcend all sports and will allow you to reach your full potential?

It is simple:

  1. CoachABILITY
  2. DependABILITY
  3. AccountABILITY

That is it…if you posses these 3 abilities, you will almost certainly reach your full potential.  Let’s break it down.

Coachability means you are willing to learn.  It means you are looking for ways to get better every day.  Coachability means you actively listen to your coach to hear the constructive lesson.  When you have coachability, you are less worried about making mistakes and more concerned with pushing yourself to get better.  Coachable do not worry about looking good because they are focused on learning.  Coachable players understand errors are a part of the process.  And here is a little secret, the more coachability you display, the more encouragement you will receive from your coaches.

Dependability means people can rely on you.  It means you are going to be where you said you were going to be and you do what you said you were going to do.  It means no matter how big or small the task, you will complete it when you said you would.  Dependability means you show up for training and meeting on time, every time.  You never have to worry about dependable people, because you know they will be there.  Dependability translates to specific plays within a game as well.  When you having dependability, you do what ever the play demands of you regardless of the current situation or potential outcome.  A dependable receiver runs clean routes every time.  Dependable defenders work hard every play.  Here is another secret, teammates are far more forgiving of mistakes made by dependable players because they know the dependable player consistently gives 100%.

Here is a great test to see if you are dependable and accountable for what you say. Three Filter Test

Accountability means you take responsibility for mistakes without making excuses.  It also means you hold your teammates to a high standard because you hold yourself to an even higher standard.  Accountability means you do the right thing even when no one is watching.  When you have accountability, you are intrinsically motivated to do your best.  If you want to be a leader, you must have accountability.

Each of these abilities are in your ME Circle.  You control them.  They are behaviors that can be achieved regardless of talent level.  In order to reach your FULL potential, you need to posses these 3 abilities!
