Confidence By the Numbers

In “The Confident Athlete”, I list 4 factors I believe can help everyone build and maintain confidence. Below are research numbers that support the importance of each one:

Talk the Talk (Self-Talk) 11%
Waseda University in Japan performed research that showed positive self-talk improved physical performance by 11%.

Walk the Walk (Body Language) 93%
Albert Mehrabian’s research on body language showed that 55% of what is said will be believed based on facial expressions, 38% on tone of voice and only 7% on the actual content. Expression and tone make up 93% of the message, leaving you just a 7% chance of success if you don’t have a great feel for your own body.

See it Be it (Visualization) 70-90%
Numerous studies show that the majority of elite athletes (70-90%) report using motor imagery to improve performance.

Preparation 15-25%
Various studies have shown that having a mental “warmup” (mental preparation) allows you to start 15-25% stronger.
